Nathi Msimanga marked his weekend with a typically gutsy and assertive drive in the Squadra Corse Polo GTi to two second place finishes in Round 4 of the Compcare Polo Cup at Red Star Raceway in Delmas on Saturday.
It was an outstanding performance by Nathi, on a day where he could demonstrate his sheer speed and consistancy, a high point of the year so far for a team that has put in a lot of hard work in preparation.
The Gauteng learner took full advantage of his car’s favourable setup in qualifying on a dry circuit which he quickly converted into strong podium finishes in the races.
Team-mate and novice to the series Xolela Njumbuxa, moving up from his successful regional championship, quickly settled in and continued developing his skills while piloting the powerful, front-wheel drive GTi around the tight and technical Red Star circuit.
“It was the start to the race weekend we were hoping for,” admitted Squadra Corse team principal Mpho Gumbi. Both cars were strong in the dry conditions and the fact that Nathi recorded some of the fastest laps of the day meant we could capitalise on his qualifying performance to finish both races in impressive second places.
Nathi Msimanga: “I enjoyed the race weekend, starting with a strong qualifying session I was able to finish on the podium in both heats. My team did a great job and my GTi was on rails all weekend.
Xolela Njumbuxa: “It’s always a great experience competing in one of the toughest race series in South Africa. Squadra Corse has developed the Polo GTi into a potent package and with a little more luck and experience, I should be right up there at the sharp end of the field.”
